Pontiac was founded in 1907 as part of the Oakland Motor Company. The first Pontiac model was a highwheeler. In 1909 Pontiac was purchased by GM. Althought it wsa purchased in 1909 the first GM Pontiac was not produced until 1926. The Pontiac outsold GM's Oakland in it's first year and GM discountinued the Oakland model. GM announced the end of the Pontiac brand in 2009 due to financial problems.
